Nagoya Megumi’s Mission Statement

We,the Nagoya Megumi(Grace)Lutheran Church, aim to be a place of comfort, reaching out to share the burdens of people everywhere, bearing witness each day to the light of God’s grace.
How we carry out our mission:

1.Proclaiming the Light of God’s Grace
We proclaim the grace of salvation given to us by Jesus Christ. We are pleased to use new online tools as well as traditional in-person fellowship. We emphasize continuous learning from the scriptures for our spiritual growth.

2.Worship and Gathering
We make Sunday worship the heart of our daily life.We hope for people of all ages to gather as God’s family and want each person to feel welcome and accepted in our fellowship.

3.Walking Together
We walk together intending to be a good neighbor, serving the social and spiritual needs of our society and local community. We are called to practice the love of Christ embracing each of us as God’s unique and precious child.

Blessed be God,even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Our History

Our church started Sunday worship in late 1951 under the leadership of Rev. Gordon Tang, a missionary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), currently the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The congregation was named “Megumi", which means Grace. In the next year Megumi built its own sanctuary. As the congregation grew, Megumi started planting new ministries. In 1955 a new congregation began Sunday worship in a tent room built in Shibata. In 1973, Megumi started a nursery school named “Hakobune”, which means Ark, as a realized missional vision for a social ministry. In 2001, Megumi and Shibata were officially combined and reorganized as one congregation in Nagoya-Megumi Church. After the merge, a new sanctuary was built in 2009. The Luther-rose stained glass gives beautiful reflections on the west wall of our new building. Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church(JELC)
